THE BASIC CONCEPTS
IN THE QUR'AN

O ye who believe! If ye fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion (to judge between
right and wrong), remove from you (all) evil (that may afflict) you, and forgive
you: for Allah is the Lord of grace unbounded.
Al-Anfal, 29

While reading Qur'an, we see that many concepts used in our daily life are cited in the verses frequently, and stressed. These concepts are crucial for understanding Qur'an and acting accordingly. Wisdom, patience, loyalty, disbelief, special favours of Allah are among these concepts.

However most of these concepts are used in a different sense then they are used in the daily conversations. Considering this, if a person regards these concepts with their meanings in the daily communication, especially a person who reads Qur'an for the first time, can not conceive Qur'an properly. He can even get a false grip and a heretic point of view.

Let's take "wisdom" as an example. Wisdom is commonly used for intelligence, to be cunning and smart, and etc. However the "wisdom" mentioned in Qur'an has no similarity with these concepts. According to Qur'an, wisdom is only peculiar to the believers, the level of wisdom can increase or decrease with respect to his righteousness. Wisdom, the mode of understanding, is a divine guide enabling him to display the true behavior and attitude which will well-please Allah, and to have a just estimation of Allah, and a criterion to judge between the right and the wrong, to achieve the highest moral attitude, to make the true decision under every condition, and to act in the most beneficial sense for the Hereafter.

On the contrary, the unbelievers  do not have wisdom no matter how intelligent they are. They can at most display intelligence. They even can not conceive what wisdom is or what acting upon wisdom means. They think wisdom is the synonym of intelligence. And some may think with a slight difference that wisdom is dignity and maturity in addition to intelligence. Nevertheless even the most intelligent, the most experienced, the most dignified, and the maturest unbeliever has 'no wisdom'.

A person who conceives "wisdom" with the false meanings mentioned above can draw many false conclusions. A totally different meaning can emerge in his mind, which would possibly lead him to a heretic belief or thought. This would also be the case for the other concepts in the Qur'an.

Therefore in order to fully understand Qur'an, to have his heart strengthened and to live according to the Qur'an, it is certainly essential for him to know in which certain context the basic concepts in the Qur'an are used and the perfect wisdom these concepts comprehend.

The root of this knowledge is the Qur'an itself and Arabic, the original language of Qur'an.

From time to time it is possible that an Arabic word is used with a special meaning in the Qur'an, and in a specific manner. Therefore it has significant importance to know in which meanings the specific word is used in the other verses in Qur'an, the subordination of the verses, the previous and the next verses, besides the Arabic definition of the word. Drawing an appropriate conclusion is possible only with an effort, and of course with the understanding and wisdom given by Allah in addition to this.

In this book, we've tried to clarify the concepts frequently met in the Qur'an, analyzing them within the verses they appear both in the general sense and in the specific sense. Allah knows the best of everything for sure.
